I believe that religion is one of the most important aspects of today’s world, and let me explain, not because it’s arguably not a big aspect but because it’s more than just believing in some deity. There are people in the world who go to church almost everyday for their own specific purposes, and there’s people who never go to church at all. Millenials (people born from 1980-2000) have been going to church less than the generations before them, but that’s completely okay, too. Among all these people, there’s one thing that’s usually pretty common among them: morality. This might be a highly optimistic view of the world, but why shouldn’t we think about humanity as friendly or helpful? Most of everyone in this world, no matter the circumstances, will help a person in need, even if that person is a complete stranger (within certain conditions). This spontaneous kindness, I’d like to think, is common among humans because it’s who we are, it’s who we’re meant to be. It’s within our wiring to help people, which can be solidified by the fact that we’re not supposed to kill or steal and all that jazz. And this is where I think religion comes to play.
Religion helps us recognize our morality as well as our deeper purpose in life, which I think is based on individual perspective, but nonetheless, I think this purpose is to be the safeguard/inspiration/beacon of hope for other people. This is super uber generalized, but it’s just the way that it has to be. Obviously, anything that brings this idea into an extremist level will bound to have its own over corrections and flaws. How about those people who don’t go to church? Even if you don’t classify yourself to have a religion or if you don’t believe in a god, there is still that inherent good within all of us. Recognizing that we need to help each other out is very important in today’s world, specially to those who are struggling more than others (Appearance v. Reality). The betterment of the human race requires cooperation, which I think religion could play a key role. We just need to realize that just because someone’s beliefs doesn’t compare to someone else’s beliefs doesn’t mean that either of them are wrong.
